The California Department of Justice will investigate a police shooting that killed a man in North Hills on Wednesday, Sept. 10, despite initial reports that the man was armed.
State Attorney General Rob Bonta will review the shooting because of Assembly Bill 1506, which requires the state DOJ to investigate any police shootings that kill an unarmed civilian, despite previous reports that the man was armed with a gun.
Footage from before the shooting by RMG News, a freelance videographer, appears to show a man believed to be the suspect waving a gun in one hand and holding a bottle in the other.
Officers responded around 5:30 p.m. near Parthenia Street and Orion Avenue after separate reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and a man with a gun that the Los Angeles Police Department said were connected with the same person.
A police helicopter directed responding officers to the man, who was walking on Parthenia near the freeway underpass, LAPD said.
Police encountered the man, and at least one officer shot him. LAPD didn’t specify how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.
Officers took the man into custody before paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the man’s weapon remained at the scene and would be taken as evidence, but they didn’t specify the type of weapon.
LAPD said no further information was available on the shooting or whether the man was, in fact, armed. The Attorney General’s Office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on why the office is investigating the police shooting.
