Fantasy Football RB Rankings, Who Should I Add Off Waiver Wires:

Trey Benson (Cardinals) was the highest-recommended RB waiver wire pickup this week.

     Analysis

Trey Benson, Cardinals — Rostered in 39% of Yahoo Leagues (Suggested 6-8% FAAB Bid)

Trey Benson was one of the best “handcuff” options before the season, and he proved why in Week 1. James Conner was healthy, and stayed healthy, but Benson saw 40% of the running back carries and totaled 69 yards (with 52 of them coming on a single breakaway run).

Conner scored a shovel-pass receiving touchdown and caught four passes (for just five yards) in total, but he averaged just 3.3 yards on his 12 carries and did not flash the explosiveness that Benson did. In some weeks, Benson might have some sneaky FLEX upside, but we’re really adding him as the handcuff to Conner. Should the 30-year-old veteran miss time — as he did in each of his first seven seasons — Benson would have fantasy RB1 upside.

Recommendation: Should be added in most 10-team leagues

Who are the best stashes from the Fantasy Football RB Rankings?

DJ Giddens and Brashard Smith are the best running back stashes ahead of Week 2.

DJ Giddens, RB – Colts (3% rostered)

Though almost all of DJ Giddens’ Week 1 work was of the empty-calorie, run-the-clock variety, it was good to see the team clearly didn’t even consider Ulysses Bentley in that role. With Taylor taking 100% of the workload up until the team’s final drive of the third quarter, Giddens tagged in and turned 12 carries into 41 yards.

His 2.08 yards created after contact would raise eyebrows in a different situation, but it’s not as if the team was running anything exotic up four scores. The Colts seemingly tipped their hand by showing us the RB we should be going after, should anything happen to Taylor.

Brashard Smith, RB – Chiefs (2% rostered)

This recommendation doesn’t come because of some lights-out fantasy performance (he scored 0.0 fantasy points), but rather because Kareem Hunt looked like his usual plodding self, while Hunt/Isiah Pacheco combined for 0.34 yards per route run.

Mind you, Xavier Worthy left the game three snaps in, and the team still didn’t find it necessary to actually deliver the ball to their top-2 running backs. Maybe the Chiefs will truly never tire of Kareem Hunt. Still, they also have a massive Super Bowl rematch against the Eagles on the horizon, so if they don’t make changes and end up 0-2, we’d better believe that they’ll want someone else (like Brashard Smith) in the rotation to string together a couple of big plays.
