I love scrolling social media looking for recipe inspiration. The creativity of food creators helps me break out of my cooking rut and I almost always run across something that I just have to save and make ASAP.
One of my most recent discoveries is Cheese Krispies, a vintage snack that's found a new life (and a new audience) on social media. The savory, bite-sized cheese crackers or wafers are made by combining shredded cheddar cheese with butter, flour and Rice Krispies cereal for a light, airy, irresistibly crisp little cheese bites.
While there's no definitive origin story for these savory snacks, they seem to have strong ties to Southern kitchens, and recipes for them have been in cookbooks for decades. Southern Living has a recipe for the snacks, which appeared in The Southern Living Community Cookbook. The cheesy bites are often compared to cheese straws, but with a lighter, crunchier twist thanks to the cereal.
On TikTok, creators have been spotlighting Cheese Krispies for some time because of the snack's simplicity and nostalgia. Content creator Bonnie Sullivan traced the recipe back to “Nana cookbooks” from the 1940s, underscoring just how entrenched these are in family recipes all over the South.
At first, I wrinkled my nose when I saw that it used rice cereal as one of the ingredients. It didn’t sound like something I’d normally want in a cheesy snack. Still, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to give it a shot. And I’m so glad I did, because the end result was far better than I expected.

What You Need to Make Cheese Krispies
These savory Rice Krispies have a weird ingredient's list, but they are so good. There are many variations of this recipe online—I used the one shared by content creator Rachel (@sweettea_and_sprinkles). You don't need much to make a batch of Cheese Krispies at your house. Just grab some shredded cheddar (I used a blend, since that’s what I had on hand), softened butter, Bisquick, Rice Krispies, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and a splash of milk. That's it!

How to Make Cheese Krispies
These savory Krispies were a little messy to make, but easy to pull together.I quartered the recipe because I didn’t want to waste too many ingredients if I didn’t like the recipe, but the smaller batch worked out perfectly. To make them, mix all of the ingredients in a bowl, use your hands to form the dough into small balls and place them on a lightly oiled baking sheet.
Press them down gently, making sure you leave plenty of room between each one because they spread a lot. Bake at 350° for about 12 minutes, then let them cool on the pan.

My Honest Thoughts About Cheese Krispies
These savory Krispies were large and delicious. This batch made about 18 crisps, and the flavor was incredible. They were crunchy around the edges but still had a little chew in the middle, kind of like the best part of a grilled cheese sandwich where the cheese hits the pan and crisps up.
The garlic and onion powder gave them a savory punch, while the cheddar brought all the cheesy goodness I wanted. They were buttery, a little salty and totally satisfying! I also loved how easy they were to make. The entire process took about 20 minutes from start to finish, and the recipe couldn’t have been simpler.
One thing to note is that mine did not store well. They turned a little greasy and soggy by the next morning, but I also think that could be remedied by putting them in the air fryer for a minute or two.
They'd be perfect for a party appetizer or as a fun addition to a cheese plate. You could also serve them with salad (for topping) or soup (for dipping). I can also confirm that they're a great anytime snack.

Fun Variations on Cheese Krispies
The base of this recipe is simple enough that you can swap out flavors depending on your mood, what you have in the pantry or the occasion. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika to the mix for a subtle heat, or use pepper jack cheese instead of cheddar to double down on the spice.
Swap in Parmesan cheese for part of the cheddar and add a sprinkle of dried oregano, basil or Italian seasoning. These would be perfect on top of a Caesar salad or served alongside tomato soup.
Mix in a spoonful of everything bagel seasoning. The garlic, sesame and poppy seeds add great crunch and flavor, and they’d pair beautifully with the cheesy base. This version would be great with a cream cheese dip!
No matter which variation you choose, the process stays the same: mix, scoop, press, bake and cool. They’re quick, easy and fun to make. Plus, they're huge (though you can adjust the size to fit your needs).
I’ll definitely be making these again, especially when I want to elevate a salad, add a little something special to a cheese board or am just craving a savory snack.
