Updating yesterday’s news of the Washington Nationals having interest in Chicago Cubs General Manager Carter Hawkins for the top baseball job in Washington, we now know that at least some kind of interview has already taken place.
The Athletic – Ken Rosenthal, Sahadev Sharma, and Patrick Mooney, specifically – reports that Hawkins has received a “preliminary interview” from the Nationals, though he declined comment on the report.
Bob Nightengale goes a bit further and says that Hawkins is already a “finalist” for the job:

— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) September 9, 2025The Athletic piece also mentions Arizona Diamondbacks executive Amiel Sawdaye and Los Angeles Dodgers senior vice president Josh Byrnes as people who’ve been contacted about the job. Others may also be involved.
From yesterday’s initial piece:
Hawkins joined the Cubs four years ago as team president Jed Hoyer’s first general manager hire. Hawkins had previously been an AGM with the Guardians, and he has worked in tandem with Hoyer on a revamp of the organization, including scouting, player development, and the use of data systems.
We know that Hoyer received an extension this summer, but we had to speculate on two related things: (1) it is my guess that Hoyer’s new deal was for three years, lining it up with the remaining three years of manager Craig Counsell’s contract; and (2) it is my guess that Hawkins received an extension of similar length. Or at least an offer.
But, in any event, even if it’s true that Hawkins received and accepted an extension, he would be permitted to interview with another organization if it were for a true promotion (i.e., the top baseball ops job, whatever the particular title). If the Nationals come calling, it’d be reasonable to expect Hawkins to take the opportunity to discuss the situation. The opportunities to lead a baseball department come along only so often.
