Bruce Willis’ Wife Emma Considered Divorce Before He Was Diagnosed With Dementia

Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming Willis revealed she considered divorce before her husband was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

“I felt like my marriage was crumbling,” Heming Willis, 49, told Vanity Fair in a new story. She recalled asking herself, 'What is going on? This is not the person that I married. Something is just so off.' And I just couldn’t figure it out."

Heming Willis found herself questioning herself and her "romantic love story" with Willis, 70, which had produced two daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. It was then that she considered divorce, fearing that the couple's relationship had come to an end.

Willis was later diagnosed with aphasia and then frontotemporal dementia, a disease that affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, which control a person’s language and behavior.

Heming Willis previously told PEOPLE that she knew something was wrong long before her husband was diagnosed with FTD in November 2022.

"FTD doesn’t scream, it whispers," Emma said. "It’s very gray to know where Bruce stopped and where his disease kicked in."

She had noticed his stutter starting to come back, but had no idea it was a symptom of the disease.

"Conversations weren't really aligning anymore, and our relationship started to shift. It was hard to put my finger on why and what was happening," she told the publication.

Heming Willis started to blame herself, wondering if there was something she was doing in their marriage that wasn't working any longer.

"It’s like you're banging your head against a brick wall. You're just like, 'Where is the miscommunication coming? What is happening within our relationship?'"

Heming Willis struggled significantly at this time.

“I was very angry, very upset, very sad,” Emma told Vanity Fair. “It was really hard for me to just separate what I was pissed at and who I was pissed at. I just wasn’t in a good state of mind. And it wasn’t good for Bruce, it wasn’t good for our children, it wasn’t good for anyone—especially not me.”

What Made Emma Heming Willis Decide to Write a Book?

While several publishers reached out asking for a tell-all, Heming Willis declined. After Maria Shriver, who runs the Penguin Life imprint The Open Field, reached out and encouraged her to share her story about caregiving interwoven with expert advice, she knew she was in the right hands. The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path is out now.
