WASHINGTON DC — In a rare rebuke of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House angrily criticised Tuesday’s Israeli military strike on Qatar, calling it an action that runs counter to the interests of both Israel and the United States.
It may also have derailed any immediate prospect of the ceasefire in Gaza that US President Donald Trump professes to crave.
Within hours of Israel’s operation to target senior Hamas figures participating in ceasefire negotiations in Doha, it became apparent that Netanyahu had failed to provide Trump with a personal tip-off that the air strikes were underway.
“This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu. It was not a decision made by me”, Trump wrote on his social media account.
Hours later, he told reporters that he was “very unhappy about every aspect” of the Israeli operation, and described himself as “not thrilled about the way that went down”.
Earlier, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said “the Trump administration was notified by the United States military that Israel was attacking Hamas”, phraseology suggesting that only military-to-military notification may have occurred at the very moment the assault was getting underway.

Trump “immediately directed Special Envoy [Steve] Witkoff to notify the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did”, she disclosed.
The President also made immediate telephone calls to Qatari leaders, promising the Emir and his Prime Minister in Doha that “such a thing will never happen again”.
But when Leavitt was asked whether Netanyahu had proffered any assurances that his military campaign against Hamas leaders in Doha is over, she could only report that Trump “over-stressed the importance of peace in the region” in a conversation with the Israeli leader.
Netanyahu, she said, “told President Trump he wants peace and he wants it quickly. That’s what the President expects to happen…he wants all of the hostages released out of Gaza and he wants this war to end”.
For that to occur, the ceasefire negotiations that the Israelis literally blew up on Tuesday would have to reconvene.
But it is unclear how the remaining members of Hamas’ negotiating team in Doha, nor even their Qatari hosts, can secure sufficient assurances from the Israelis that they will not be targeted again.
The Arab world is united in fury over the Israeli military action, with the Jordanians describing it as “a blatant violation of international law”, and the Saudis calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty.
By attacking one of Washington’s closest allies in the region, Netanyahu has not only publicly disrespected Trump, he has also created difficulties for the US leader in an emirate that hosts 10,000 American troops at the Al Udeid air base.
As recently as May, the Qataris hosted additional US forces for combined military exercises aimed at improving interoperability under the banner “Exercise Invisible Sentry”.
Now, after going out on a limb by offering to broker ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel, Qatar may require ironclad security guarantees before any discussions can resume.
It is far from evident that Israel would be willing to provide them, nor that any pledge would be credible, leaving Witkoff with a fresh crisis to try and mediate.
On social media, Trump suggested that what he called Tuesday’s “unfortunate incident” in Doha “could serve as an opportunity for PEACE”.
But that seems a pipedream rooted in a failure to understand the possible intent of Tuesday’s devastating Israeli action.
Netanyahu’s critics contend that the strike on Hamas negotiators, months in the planning, was designed to derail any prospect for a ceasefire.
Just getting talks back on the rails could prove to be a very lengthy process.
