Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams is running for an at-large Weld County Commissioner in 2026 after serving the maximum three terms as Weld County Sheriff.
Reams announced the run Tuesday and will soon file his candidate affidavit with the Secretary of State, according to a news release from Reams.
“I’m excited to continue serving the citizens of Weld County in a new role,” Reams said in the release. “I believe that I have a lot of hands-on experience to bring to the Board of Commissioners. The Weld Board of Commissioners has a proud tradition of serving the residents of Weld County with a very low tax rate all with no long-term or short-term debt, but I have seen a tendency to move away from this time-honored philosophy. I believe I can help keep the County going in a more productive direction when elected.”
Reams lists five primary things he plans to focus on if elected, according to the release:
Keeping property taxes as low as possible. Ensuring responsible growth of government services. Eliminating bureaucracy and wasteful spending. Defending the right for citizens to engage with Weld County government. Ensuring public safety is a priority for all Weld County residents.Reams began with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office in 1997 as a master control operator in the Weld County Jail. He has been with the office since, spending the past 11 years as sheriff.
He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and graduated from the FBI National Academy, the release states..
“I’ve been fortunate to work in numerous positions within the Sheriff’s Office throughout my career, and I have gained valuable insights into the many departments and offices within county government,” Reams said in the release. “From working with the public, to supervising employees, to managing budgets, to helping create policy, every position has enabled me to learn how an effective and efficient office can best serve the public and these skills will only help me in the new role of Commissioner.”
Outside of his law enforcement career, he has volunteered coaching youth sports and the Valley High School football team. He has also spent time as a board member for Weld RE-1, a board member for “A Woman’s Place” and a board member and president with Youth and Family Connections, the release states.
