SANTA ANA – Orange County’s releaguing meeting Tuesday concluded with the passage of the most conservative proposal of the 16 that were presented.
The only change made from the current school year’s league structures was the addition of Pacifica Christian to the Pacific Coast Conference.
The winning proposal, which was the leading vote-getter among the 16 proposals throughout the nine rounds of voting Tuesday at Segerstrom High School, will be submitted to the CIF Southern Section Council for approval on Sept 25.
Tuesday’s releaguing meeting covered all Orange County high school sports other than football. Football creates its leagues via a separate process.
What is in the winning proposal is not what all of the voting representatives wanted.
Pacifica Christian wants to be in the Trinity League.
Irvine public schools, currently in a 10-school Pacific Coast Conference that includes three private schools, want to join the Coast View Conference, an all-public school group in south Orange County.
The Irvine public schools indicated that they will appeal Tuesday’s results at the CIF Southern Section Council meeting.
Pacifica Christian representatives were asking questions Tuesday about how the appeals process works.
The CIF Southern Section Council meeting is the last stop in the releaguing process. Representatives of other areas in the vast Southern Section – Ventura County, the Inland Empire, Los Angeles County – will hear the appeals and vote on whatever becomes the final Orange County proposal.
Other appeals are possible.
The Century Conference of north county schools sought to have Crean Lutheran leave its group and go to the Trinity group. They also advocated the creation of a league of the county’s smaller public schools that would include Calvary Chapel, Crean Lutheran, Pacifica Christian, Rosary, Sage Hill and St. Margaret’s.
Appeals must be submitted to the CIF Southern Section office by Thursday. Schools must submit their appeals individually and, if heard at the CIF-SS Council meeting, must be presented there individually.
