A bipartisan House delegation will visit China later this month, per NBC News.
The trip is being organized by Rep. Adam Smith (D-Calif.), who told NBC News the trip is “fairly significant.” Smith is the ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee.
“It’s part of wanting to try to open up a dialogue between the U.S. and China,” Smith added. “And I personally think it’s important that you do that.”
The trip would be the first congressional visit to China since 2019, when Reps. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) and Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) led a bipartisan delegation to the country.
CNN reported last week that President Trump could meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a trip to South Korea next month. Last month, the U.S. and China agreed to pause tariff increases on each other’s goods for an additional 90 days. U.S. tariffs on Chinese imported goods are set at 30 percent, while Chinese levies on American imported goods are set at 10 percent; those rates will remain in effect until Nov. 10 — unless an agreement is reached beforehand.
Smith told NBC News that “we don’t know yet” whether the group will meet with Xi during the trip. He added that Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), the chair of the House Armed Services Committee, will not join the trip.
"I am deeply worried that, yes, China is a major rising power that we seem to be talking less and less to," Smith noted. "We need to figure out a way to resolve our differences, and can't do it by not talking to each other."
