I’m going to dive deeper into offensive line tomorrow, but I felt the need to bring this up on its own first today: Jonah Jackson was BAD last night. Like really bad.
I’m not talking like “Oh, he got beat a few times in pass pro,” I’m talking like literally the worst guard performance of the week.
According to Pro Football Focus’ player grades, Jackson finished with an overall grade of 31.0 in 66 snaps last night. In 46 pass blocking reps, he scored an abysmal 22.6, and in run 20 blocking reps, it wasn’t much better at 44.8. He committed two pre-snap penalties and gave up five pressures. Talk about a tough debut.
Jonah Jackson Struggles Mightily in Bears Debut
Jonah Jackson was brought to the Bears seemingly hand-picked by Ben Johnson. Jackson was a Pro Bowler for Johnson on the Lions in 2021. But since then, he’s struggled to stay on the field, and he hasn’t come close to replicating that level of play since. I don’t think that Johnson and Ryan Poles envisioned Jackson being a Pro Bowl-level player when the team traded a sixth-round pick for him this offseason. They did, however, see him as a stabilizing veteran who could at least bring some consistency to a position that has lacked it for quite some time now.
If Caleb Williams is going to develop properly and learn how to play on time in Ben Johnson’s system, the offensive line just has to be better. What they got from their right guard on Monday night, and their center, too, if we’re being honest, was just unacceptable. No quarterback can play on time when there’s consistent and immediate pressure up the middle. The line’s struggles were far from the only reason Caleb Williams didn’t play well in last night’s loss, but they were also a contributor to his struggles as opposed to being an asset in his favor.
Caleb Williams needs to improve but so does Jonah Jackson and Drew Dalman. Too many pressures up the middle. Braxton and Darnell Wright had solid games. Jonah Jackson had a team low 31.1 overall grade including pass block grade of 22.6 per PFF. #DaBears #Bears pic.twitter.com/wE06PSNQBO
— Clay Harbor (@clayharbs82) September 9, 2025It’s just one game, so we can’t quite punt on Jonah Jackson yet. He’s played in just five total games since the beginning of last season, and the Vikings are far from a match-up in which he’d have time to get his feet wet again. Having said that, the Bears just flat out need more from him.
I saw some Nate Davis comparisons flying around this morning, and I don’t want to go that far. Davis’ issues quite a bit of the time were effort and attitude-related. I’m not questioning Jonah Jackson’s attitude or effort at all whatsoever. However, he was brought in to be a solution at the right guard position. The Bears thought as much when they added a year onto his contract. There’s still time for him to be that, but his first chance to be that solution was a big flop. Hopefully, that changes in Week 2.
