Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D), seen as a rising star within the Democratic Party, launched his Senate campaign Tuesday, looking to unseat incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).
“The biggest divide in this country is not left vs. right. It’s top vs. bottom. Billionaires want us looking left and right at each other instead of looking up at them,” Talarico said on his website. “The people at the top work so hard to keep us angry and divided because our unity is a threat to their wealth and power."
He added, "So their cable news networks, and their social media algorithms, tear us apart.”
Talarico, a former middle school teacher, is the second major Democratic candidate in the Senate primary, joining former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), who challenged and lost to incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in last year’s race.
Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, ran for Texas House and flipped a GOP-leaning district in 2018.
“They divide us by party, by race, by gender, by religion so we don’t notice they’re defunding our schools, gutting our healthcare and cutting taxes for themselves and their rich friends. It’s the oldest strategy in the world: divide and conquer,” Talarico said in his announcement. “But we will not be conquered.”
The state lawmaker has garnered national attention through his social media posts, where he speaks openly about his faith and was a major Democratic voice amid the redistricting fight. He has also recently been on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
Cornyn is also currently embroiled in a competitive GOP primary challenge against Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). The race marks the incumbent senator's toughest reelection battle yet as Paxton has framed himself as an outsider who is more aligned with President Trump’s politics.
Trump won the Lone Star State by 13 points in the 2024 presidential election.
