To say that last Saturday was a disaster for the Florida Gators would be a massive understatement, as their loss at the hands of the USF Bulls has extinguished any sort of hype the team had coming into the new campaign.
One of the worst moments of the loss came late in the fourth quarter when sophomore defensive lineman Brendan Bett spat on a USF offensive lineman. The ref saw the whole event transpire, and as such, Bett was ejected and the Gators were slapped with a 15-yard penalty.
Another spitting incident. This time in the South Florida-Florida game. Florida DL Brendan Bett was ejected and the Gators were assessed a 15-yard penalty. South Florida went on to kick a walk-off field goal later on the drive. #CFB pic.twitter.com/2wLi8Hdtgx
— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) September 7, 2025The penalty ultimately ended up helping the Bulls inch closer to field goal range, and Nico Gramatica would end up nailing the walk-off game-winning kick as time expired to propel USF to an unlikely upset win.
These types of incidents are always uncalled for, but the fact that it directly led to Florida losing only serves as more salt being rubbed into the wound.
According to The Athletic’s Matt Baker, Gators’ head coach Billy Napier said on Monday that he believes that Bett is remorseful for the incident, and that he will also issue a personal apology to both the player he spat on and the USF program as a whole.
Napier on Brendan Bett, who drew the 15-yard penalty for spitting against USF."Brendan, we spent quite a bit of time with him yesterday. Look, I think that the kid is remorseful. I think he feels as if he let the team down."He'll issue an apology and apologize to the USF player
