Alan Bersten has broken his silence just hours before taking to the dance floor with Jenna Dewan after stepping in to replace Dewan’s partner, Val Chmerkovskiy.
Bersten — who was previously partnered with Giada Di Laurentiis — and Dewan will dance the Viennese waltz to “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers.
“I am so honored to be stepping in and dancing with @jennadewan you are such a light and it’s so beautiful to see you and your mom share the floor,” Bersten shared via Instagram on Tuesday, October 20.
Bersten’s remarks were shared ahead of Tuesday’s “Dedication Night” performances, after the Ukrainian dancer was suspended for one week of competition following public remarks made towards judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
View this post on InstagramAfter Carrie Ann criticized a lift performed by Chmerkovskiy’s wife, fellow professional dancer Jenna Johnson, and her celebrity partner, Harry Shum Jr., during their samba on October 13, he took to social media to share his reaction.
“You almost saw ‘Fresh Prince’ enter the ballroom last night,” he shared in a since-deleted TikTok video, referencing the infamous moment from the 2022 Academy Awards when actor Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage while shouting, “Keep my wife’s name out your mouth.”
Despite apologizing and removing the video, a spokesperson for BBC Studios, the production company behind Dancing With the Stars, confirmed the suspension in a statement to Us Weekly.
“The well-being of everyone who works on Dancing with the Stars is non-negotiable,” the statement said. “Val’s social media post was inappropriate and does not reflect the values or standards expected of anyone connected with the show. As a result, he will not participate in next week’s show.”
