Wednesday Star Emma Myers Reveals How Much Her Original Audition Played Into Body Swap Episode (Exclusive)

Wednesday fans may not know this. But, in a different universe, Emma Myers would be the one donning the iconic black braids, not Jenna Ortega.

It seems hard to believe, considering how much the actress became an instant fan-favorite with her portrayal of the endlessly perky Enid Sinclair, the titular teen's brightly-colored werewolf roommate. But before she landed Enid, Myers had initially auditioned as Wednesday Addams. And, while the casting team ultimately chose to go with Scream star Ortega instead, she was ultimately given the chance to get her own turn in the title role in the recently released Season 2 of the hit Netflix series.

"Woe Thyself," the sixth episode of Wednesday's second season, saw the two roomies at odds due to a number of secrets kept by both parties. Wednesday's attempt to resurrect her psychic abilities leads to a true "Freaky Friday" (or perhaps "Weird Wednesday") scenario. In an instant, the pair has swapped bodies. And they spend the rest of the episode not only attempting to reverse the situation, but also coming to a better understanding of each other after walking a mile in the other's shoes.

On paper, given Myers's origin story with Wednesday, one would think that this would be a natural way for her to bring that audition into the show proper. But, in an exclusive interview with Parade, the star of A Minecraft Movie said this was not the case.

"It was not based on Jenna's portrayal. Because I am Jenna's Wednesday," she reveals. "There was no room for me to bring in my own sort of personality, because it would just be completely wrong. So all of my 'Wednesday-ness' was based off of Jenna's."

And Myers's "Wednesday-ness" led to a powerhouse performance in Episode 6. Fans have lauded both her and Ortega for their mastery of each other's characters, as they effortlessly swapped between bright and dark. Many have complimented the actresses on turning out freakishly good portrayals of each other. And Myers admits there was some added pressure of doing so in the moment.

"It was a very strange concept, especially to do it in front of her," she says. "It was sort of weird when you have to imitate each other and do it in front of one another. And so we both sat each other down, and we were like, 'Okay, if you tell me I'm doing something wrong, it won't offend me. Please slap me across the face and tell me I'm doing a bad job. If I'm doing a bad job, like, just be real with me.' And I think just being honest with one another, if we did something that was so out of character, was really helpful."

The first two seasons of Wednesday are currently streaming on Netflix.
