Alex Morgan, one of the most accomplished and celebrated athletes in San Diego sports history, had her jersey retired in a post-match ceremony following Wave FC’s match against the Houston Dash on Sunday.

She now is the first, last and only person to ever wear no. 13 for the Wave.

“As Alex’s teammate for more than 11 years, I had the pleasure of seeing her play up close,” Morgan’s former World Cup teammate Ali Krieger told the Snapdragon Stadium crowd during the ceremony. “She was the true engine of the team. That’s the kind of player she was — someone who could make the players around her better.”

“You’re the kind of person who could make the game look effortless,” Krieger told Morgan during her speech. “Alex, congratulations on this incredible milestone.”

Morgan, a striker who suited up for Wave FC from 2022-24, is one of the more influential women athletes of her generation. She’s a two-time World Cup champion (2015, 2019) and a two-time Olympic medalist (gold, 2012 and bronze, 2020).

After making a name for herself playing for a number of foreign and domestic pro soccer clubs, as well as in global tournaments, Morgan was among the first players signed to Wave FC upon the club’s founding in 2021.

During her time with the team, she played a pivotal role, and scored the Wave’s first-ever goal and led the club to consecutive playoff appearances.

In the club’s inaugural season, she won the NWSL Golden Boot with 16 goals, helping San Diego to become the first NWSL expansion team ever to qualify for the playoffs.

The following season, she helped guide the Wave to its first-ever trophy, the NWSL Shield, an annual award given to the team with the best regular season record.

By the time she retired from her professional soccer in September, 2024, Morgan was Wave FC’s all-time leading scoring and assist leader, with 28 goals and eight assists.

After helping make the Wave one of the more successful franchises in all of U.S. women’s sports, she then became a part-owner of the club in May.

Now, at the age of 36, she has become just the third NWSL player ever to have their jersey retired, following fellow legends Lauren Holiday, whose FC Kansas City jersey was retired in 2015, and Megan Rapinoe, who was honored by the Seattle Reign in March 2024.

“Thank you all so much for being here tonight and for so many moments in my career,” Morgan said. “Three years (with the Wave) may seem like a short time in my career, but it’s these three years that were the most transformative (for me).”

Beyond her playing career, Morgan has been an advocate for women’s sports and an entrepreneur. In 2019, co-founded TOGETHXR, a media and commerce company dedicated to equal rights and covering and investing in women’s sports.

In 2023, she launched the Alex Morgan Foundation, which focuses on positively impacting the lives of girls and women in San Diego County and beyond. Additionally, she’s an investor in the 3-on-3 professional women’s basketball league, Unrivaled.

After thanking her family and friends in her speech, Morgan turned her attention to the current squad of Wave FC players.

“The grind is real, and you girls do that every day,” she told the players. “I’ll be cheering for you every day as a fan — and as an owner.”

She then ended her remarks with some words for the fans.

“Thank you,” she said, “this means everything.”
