Chicago Cubs Lineup: All the Righties You Can Muster

CUBS LINEUP — Yesterday’s loss was frustrating. The Cubs can lose games. It’s gonna happen. But losing a game 2-1 at home with the wind howling out against a bad starter/team really shouldn’t happen. Let’s see if they can make up for it today against Nationals lefty, Andrew Alvarez.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Carson Kelly, C Carlos Santana, 1B Dansby Swanson, SS Justin Turner, DH Matt Shaw, 3B Kevin Alcantara, CF

Well, if you’re going to go without lefties Pete Crow-Armstrong (fouled a ball of his knee) and Kyle Tucker (calf injury), it may as well be against a lefty. Pete Crow-Armstrong was going to sit today anyway, and the Cubs have some extra righties on the bench to backfill for Tucker, too.

In this case, Kevin Alcantara gets the nod in center field, batting ninth, and Seiya Suzuki heads out to right field with Justin Turner coming in to DH. Elsewhere, Carlos Santana comes in to play first base for Michael Busch, and Carson Kelly is the man behind the plate.

So that means the only players batting lefty in the starting Cubs lineup today are … no one! Pretty unusual for a very lefty (and switch-hitting) heavy Cubs team.

Nico Hoerner is leading off, as he does against lefties. Matt Shaw moves up a spot to accomodate Alcantara.

    Washington Nationals Lineup:

    TBA

    Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Drew Pomeranz, RHP (Opener) + Colin Rea, RHP (Bulk?)

Cubs reliever Drew Pomeranz will open the game today, and I’m not sure who’s going to follow for the bulk. Colin Rea, who hasn’t pitched since September 1 and was initially announced as the starter, is a good bet, however.

In fact, the Cubs operated this way against the Nationals earlier this year (with Pomeranz opening, followed by Colin Rea), so they likely opted for this out of preference, not necessity.

Rea hasn’t been his sharpest lately, so I think this is a smart call.

    Washington Nationals: Andrew Alvarez, LHP

Andrew Alvarez, 26, just made his Major League debut last week against the Marlins, tossing five shutout innings with just 1 hit and two walks allowed. Before that, he spent the entire year in Triple-A, where he was repeating the level with a 4.10 ERA over 25 starts and 123.0 IP.

I don’t have much personal knowledge on Alvarez, the former 12th-round pick, as he’s never popped up on my radar before today. But I can tell you that he’s offspeed heavy, leading the way with his slider, followed by near equal usage of his four-seamer (91.8 MPH) and curveball (83.2 MPH). He’ll also mix in a sinker and a changeup, but those both seem to be rare “show me” pitches.
