WELD COUNTY — A project to have Denver Zoo animals on 570 acres at the Lembke Family Preserve is moving forward.
The Weld County Planning Commission Tuesday gave initial approval to a Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance plan for a Use by Special Review Permit for Keeping of Exotic Animals. The permit application is expected to go to county commissioners for approval, based on materials on the Weld County government website.
The Lembke Family Preserve site would not be open to the public. It’s located near Keenesburg, about 4 miles east of Weld County Road 69 and about 3.5 miles north of U.S. 34. A plan related to conservation breeding efforts and animal care on the Lembke Family Preserve site was announced in February 2024.
The Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance plans to build a 5,000-square-foot metal feed barn at the site to start, and two employees would be at the site at all times, based on a presentation made to the Planning Commission Tuesday. A 10-foot-high fence would surround the property.
The zoo plans to use the site to expand its conservation efforts. In Phase 2 of the zoo’s plans, employees would focus on conservation breeding of species that are threatened or endangered in Colorado for amphibians such as boreal toads and birds such as the Gunnison sage grouse, according to Tuesday’s presentation.
Employees would work out of an office trailer, and the site may have additional feed barns in the future, according to the presentation. At full buildout, 10 employees might be at the site every day, and zoo donors and benefactors could visit.
The Denver Zoo’s 84-acre campus is at 2300 Steele St. in Denver.
In 2024, a zoo press statement said the Lembke family was one of the donors who participated in the zoo’s $75 million “Into the Great Wild Open” fundraising campaign to support animal care, wildlife conservation, new facilities, habitats and educational experiences.
