An elderly husband and wife were killed in a two-vehicle collision on Friday afternoon in west suburban Geneva, authorities said.
The incident was reported at around 1:40 p.m. near Bricher Road and Fisher Drive, according to Geneva police. A preliminary investigation revealed a 2020 BMW X3 SUV traveling eastbound on Bricher Road struck a 2005 Toyota Corolla, which was attempting to turn westbound onto Bricher Road from Fisher Drive.
The impact of the collision sent the BMW into a wooded area north of the intersection and caused the vehicle to catch fire.
The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters, authorities said. An 85-year-old man driving the Corolla and his 88-year-old wife died in the crash, police said.
Their names were being withheld while authorities worked to notify family members.
The BMW, which was being driven by an 18-year-old man, had three passengers, ages 18 to 19 years old, police said. The driver and two passengers were cleared by paramedics at the scene. One passenger was taken to an area hospital.
No charges had been filed as of Friday evening.
Geneva police were investigating in conjunction with the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Kane County Coroner’s Office. Bricher Road was shut down for the crash investigation but had reopened as of 7:40 p.m.
