Prepare for respiratory virus season with flu, COVID vaccines: UCHealth

UCHealth encourages community members to get their updated 2025-26 flu and COVID-19 vaccinations as the upcoming respiratory virus season approaches.

Vaccination helps prevent the spread of severe illnesses, according to Dr. Michelle Barron, senior medical director of infection prevention and control at UCHealth.

“Staying healthy isn’t a bad thing,” she continued. “You get to go to work, you get to go to concerts, you get to spend time with your children because you aren’t home sick in bed. Vaccines help keep you, your families and our community safer.”

Flu season typically starts in October and continues through May, with infection rates peaking during the holiday season, according to a UCHealth news release. To help protect themselves and their communities from infection, Barron urges all Coloradans to get the flu shot before respiratory virus season peaks, especially those most at risk for developing complications from infection. This includes people over 65, pregnant women, young babies and people with underlying health conditions or chronic diseases.

Flu vaccines are available at most retail pharmacies, along with their COVID-19 vaccine. Barron added that the same recommendations for the flu shot apply to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Expected to be available in mid-September, the latest COVID-19 vaccine targets a strain of COVID-19 from the JN.1 lineage, which accounts for more than 70% of strains in the United States, the release said.

“We can’t forget about COVID-19 and the tools we have in our toolbox to help reduce disease spread and hospitalization,” Barron said. “There is so much information out in the world, it’s hard to decipher between what is real and what is not. That’s why I recommend Coloradans talk to their health care providers. They study this information and can provide accurate and detailed information based on your individual health care needs.”

UCHealth also recommends people get tested for the flu or COVID-19 if they are experiencing symptoms, because a “timely diagnosis” can help reduce the severity of illness and manage symptoms.
