Ever since the 2024-25 NBA season came to a close on June 22, the Chicago Bulls and Josh Giddey were allowed to strike a deal.
The 22-year-old guard entered this offseason as a restricted free agent after coming to the organization via trade the previous summer. Of course, this meant the Chicago Bulls had the upper hand in contract negotiations. By extending Giddey a qualifying offer of one year, $11.2 million, the front office gave itself the right to match any contract sheet he signed with another franchise. To put it differently, they essentially controlled his destiny.
Regardless, almost everyone expected some gamesmanship. Giddey had every right to try to find someone who would meet the price tag he wanted in free agency (reportedly $30.0 million a year). The Bulls had every right to call his bluff. Eventually, money dried up around the league, giving Chicago even more power to squeeze Giddey toward a team-friendly multi-year deal.
Fast forward to today, and the two sides have shockingly remained at a standstill. The Bulls were surely hoping that Giddey’s camp would eventually opt for the long-term security, even if it meant less money. To be clear, many would still consider this to be the most probable outcome, but there is no question that the odds have diminished. The longer we go without a deal, the more likely it seems that Giddey could take the ultimate risk and accept his qualifying offer. This would give the guard the right to enter unrestricted free agency in 2026, potentially leaving the Bulls high and dry.

After months of tracking the Josh Giddey drama, it finally feels like we are inching toward a resolution. The NBA does set a deadline for when a qualifying offer can expire. To little surprise, this is set for Oct. 1, which is around when most teams will either host their Media Day or officially begin training camp. Those exact dates for the Bulls have yet to be announced, but we do know the first preseason game is set for Oct. 7.
In other words, the Bulls should reach a conclusion with Giddey at some point over the next 26 days. But that also isn’t guaranteed. The NBA does allow for the QO deadline to be extended as long as both parties agree to do so. In fact, the Bulls and Giddey could push things all the way back to March 1, 2026, if they really wanted to. I highly doubt they would. Chicago is not going to agree to extend negotiations without some guarantee that a multi-year deal will be reached. If anything, extending is another form of leverage for the Bulls. The QO is only going to stay there as a failsafe for the Giddey if the Bulls allow it. The alternative is that the QO expires and Giddey remains a restricted free agent until a new deal is reached – aka he loses any and all leverage.
The best option for both parties would be to put pen to paper before Oct. 1. This would remove any lingering tension before the start of a new season and give both sides a better idea of how to handle the future. Whether or not that will happen, however, is something only time will tell.
P.S. The Bulls reportedly did offer Josh Giddey a larger deal recently, which could be a sign that things are trending in the right direction. More on that below!
