Singer-songwriter Tom Waits, 75, is starring in the upcoming film Father Mother Sister Brother.
Pitchfork reported that the film, written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, also features performances from Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, and Françoise Lebrun. According to the publication, Waits has been in several of Jarmusch's past projects, including Down by Law, Coffee and Cigarettes, and The Dead Don’t Die.
The 2025 film consists of three chapters, with each one focused on the dynamics of a different family. The movie's trailer shows that Waits plays Jeff (Drivers) and Emily's (Bialik) father.
"You've always been my favorite son," said Waits' character to Jeff in the film's trailer.
Jeff then replies, "Well, I'm your only son."
Jim Jarmusch Discussed His New Film at the 2025 Venice Film Festival Alongside the Cast of 'Father Mother Sister Brother'
During a press conference at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, alongside the film's cast, Jarmusch shared his process of coming up the concept of Father Mother Sister Brother.
"I don't really know where the hell it came from. I usually carry ideas around for a year or more. Sometimes many years before I right very quickly in a few weeks," said the director while on the panel. "I wrote this in three weeks and I don't know where it comes from. I've always loved this form of different chapters in film. It's certainly not new in literature or in cinema either."
In addition, he said he "worked very very hard with this structure" for the film. According to Jarmusch, each of the three chapters of the film can't work without the other.
"If you were to show one chapter without the others I would be mortified," said Jarmusch.
He also expressed gratitude to the film's cast and crew.
"I'm so very lucky to get to work with these amazing collaborators," said the director during the panel.
The film's United States release date is December 24.
