Welcome Back, Football! Luther Burden Has a New Number (Again), Captains Chatter, Cap Space Update, and Other Bears Bullets

The bad news is that the Chicago Bears don’t kick off in Week 1 until Monday. But the good news is that we have four days’ worth of football games at the college and pro level that will help get us through to Monday Night Football. And it all begins TONIGHT with the Thursday night opener between the Super Bowl LIX champion Philadelphia Eagles and a Dallas Cowboys team that is a punchline right now. Welcome back, football!

ICYMI: The Bears named captains on Tuesday, and I found it notable that wide receiver DJ Moore, defensive end Montez Sweat, cornerback Jaylon Johnson, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, and tight end Cole Kmet — who were captains last year — are not captains this year. On the one hand, I don’t want to put too much into it because multiple players were going to lose the “C” patch by default because there was no way the team was going to have eight captains again. But on the other hand, Sweat, Moore, Johnson, and Edmunds are four of the team’s five highest-paid players. I imagine those guys will be playing with major chips on their shoulders this year. An updated look at the Bears’ salary cap situation (via OverTheCap) has the team with $9,513,762 worth of space after Jaylon Johnson’s contract restructure. While there is no imminent move that will use this newfound cap space, the restructure does give the team some wiggle room in the operational budget. If things go well at the outset, the front office could conceivably leverage this cap space at the trade deadline. But if things don’t go as hoped, the roll-over cap space could come in handy next offseason. I found it to be irksome when former Bears GM Ryan Pace was using contract restructuring for over-the-hill players to clear cap space at the end of his tenure. It was a real “Robbing Peter to pay Paul” situation at Halas Hall. But around the league, teams often restructure contracts of high-end players to create cap space. If current Bears GM Ryan Poles does that and avoids the pitfalls that mucked things up at the end of Ryan Pace’s regime, then I will be OK with the moves. Finally, Bears rookie receiver Luther Burden III has landed on a number — and he has an explanation:

So based on the latest info it appears that Luther Burden III (@lutherburden3) will instead wear number 10. #DaBears pic.twitter.com/UUiBUE3Lcz

Bears rookie WR Luther Burden III changed his number from 87 to 13 and has now settled on 10. He wanted the lowest available jersey number and grabbed it.

    — Chris Emma (@CEmma670) September 3, 2025 The first of three Bears second-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, Burden began the summer wearing No. 87 — and had a funny bit of reasoning behind it. At the end of August, Burden was switching it up and moving to No. 13. Considering that he wore No. 3 in college, putting a 1 in front of his pro number made sense. Plus, the No. 13 is aesthetically pleasing for wide receivers. However, Burden is now moving on to No. 10 because it is the lowest number available. At this point, I don’t care what number he wears. Just score a lot of touchdowns and make fun plays happen on the field. Whichever number you decide to wear will grow on us as fans. Scott Bair (Marquee) has more on Kyle Monangai, the Bears’ seventh-round running back who could be in line to snatch the RB2 role. With Roschon Johnson still working his way back from a training camp injury, Monangai appears to be primed to be the primary backup behind starter D’Andre Swift in Week 1. We’ll see what the injury report says about Roschon later today. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Another name to watch on the injury report is Jaylon Johnson. The Bears’ top cornerback practiced on Wednesday and will do everything in his power to suit up for the Week 1 matchup against Justin Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings. If Johnson can’t give it a go, Nahshon Wright looks to be the next man up in Chicago’s secondary. For what it’s worth, Wright sounds ready to take on the challenge. And after being traded, cut, sent to a practice squad, and signed as an afterthought, I’d hope that Wright is ready to take the bull by the horns if the opportunity presents itself. (The Athletic) This is a fun graphic from the NFL’s Australia and New Zealand wing. Do you see what I see?

    — NFL Australia & NZ (@NFLAUNZ) September 4, 2025 You see which player they picked to represent the Bears in this graphic, right? It’s Aussie-born punter Tory Taylor. Let the record show that Taylor isn’t the only Aussie punter on the graphic, as he is standing near Seattle Seahawks punter Michael Dickson. The NFL’s international wing continues to expand, and I fully expect regular-season games to be played in Australia sooner rather than later. Over at the Sun-Times, Jason Lieser has a schedule breakdown for Chicago’s football team in Ben Johnson’s first year as head coach. The Tribune has a rundown of the new rules to keep an eye on this NFL season. This is not a graphic I expected to see:
