Hubert Davis hired a general manager and won’t say much about it.
On his Monday night radio show last February 3, Davis said that his job has changed so much that he needs a general manager, similarly to what Bill Belichick has in Mike Lombardi.
“I am gonna increase the staff and it’s needed,” Hubert told Jones Angell. “I never would’ve thought that four years ago when I took the job. I’m a hundred percent on we need a general manager.”
Davis added, “Now there’s so much your plate that it will take you away from doing what’s most important, coaching basketball. And so, yes, we’re gonna hire a GM.”
Hubert might have been emotional after an 87-70 loss at Duke two nights before that was more lopsided than the score indicated. And the Blue Devils had hired one of the first general managers in college basketball, Rachel Baker, who worked for Nike and the NBA.
Davis’ hire came toward the end of last season, UNC alum and Morehead Scholar Jim Tanner, whose contract was released to show he earns close to a million dollars a year with a lucrative bonus structure.
But, strangely, Tanner has kept a low public profile in Chapel Hill, and a spokesman for the basketball office said there are no plans for him to hold a press conference but will “probably do something on our podcast” with Angell.
Additionally, the spokesman said, Tanner “works with the coaches to identify players and negotiates rev-share contracts, doesn’t recruit off campus but constantly talks roster building with Hubert and the rest of the coaching staff.”
Lombardi does a Monday morning interview on 97.9 The Hill that Mack Brown did for six years and hosts the weekly one-hour show from Top of the Hill instead of Belichick. Lombardi has been on the Carolina Insider podcast and talked about his duties helping the Hoodie evaluate players they might recruit and, like Tanner, also negotiates rev-share contracts with current team members.
Davis said in his press conference this week that he has known Tanner for a long time and the staff of four assistant coaches and Hubert all work well together. The hoop Heels have veteran senior Seth Trimble and nine new players this season, so there is/was a lot of negotiating going on.

The spokesman said he is not allowed to recruit off campus despite the conjecture that Tanner helped Hubert sign two new foreign players (6-6 guard Luka Bogavac from Montenegro and 7-footer Ivan Matlekovic from Croatia) to contracts this season.
Still, with the tremendous interest in Carolina basketball, Davis and Tanner need to be more transparent.
