ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Institute of Technology just unveiled its new “City Art Space,” Wednesday in downtown Rochester.
Run by RIT’s College of Art and Design, the creative hub will serve as a place students and local artists can connect, collaborate, and show off their work.
“To have a space like this allows our students to experience the creative space they’re familiar with, but to be embedded in downtown Rochester,” said John Aasp, Gallery Director at RIT College of Art & Design. “And that’s very valuable for them to expand their creative community, to get exposure with people that may not visit them on campus.”
Located in the Neighborhood of Play near the Strong Museum of Play, the space will host exhibits, events, and hands-on learning opportunities.
“Creativity and innovation together – it’s not just about art on the wall. It’s about creating community around ideas, around innovation, and imagining a better world,” said Aasp.
According to RIT’s website, in 1999, “Gallery r” opened on Park Avenue, which hosted exhibitions by students, faculty and alumni, operated by RIT’s School of Art.
“RIT’s City Art Space isn’t just a gallery. It’s a bridge between campus and community, a place where students and faculty can share their work, and where all of us can come to see, learn, and be inspired,” said Mayor Malik Evans.
