Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, Mathison admitted there was a method to the writers’ madness of turning Drew into a horrible person.
“Obviously, everybody hates me like crazy, but at the same time, they had to do that for the last four or five months. They can’t just have people not like me. They have to have people want to kill me! And in order to have multiple people want to kill you, you’ve got to be pretty despicable — and they’ve done a really good job with that with Drew!” he expressed.
The writers certainly made us hate Drew. Mathison has endured a lot of backlash amid Drew’s downfall. However, as Parade reported, Mathison’s co-stars have come out to defend him amid the Drew hate.
Mathison also trusted the acting process to allow him to bring the ugly side of Drew out. For those wondering, no, he did not agree with his alter ego’s behavior. The actor would often read a script and shake his dead in disbelief at Drew’s latest actions.
Cameron Mathison Knew Fans Would Be Happy

And then, from the audience perspective, I knew, ‘The viewers are gonna love this!’ They all want to shoot Drew! Everybody wants Drew shot and dead. So I wanted to make sure that I gave them my all,” Mathison expressed.
The actor is beyond excited for the fallout of the highly anticipated shooting, especially considering the lengthy suspect list. Mathison even compared the aftermath to the Who Shot JR (Larry Hagman) frenzy from Dallas back in the ‘80s.
