BRIGHTON, N.Y. – New York students are back in the classroom with a new rule in place.
Starting this year, New York schools have banned electronics like phones, tablets and smartwatches in the classroom. Students shared mostly positive experiences with the change.
“Some of my friends struggled with it, but I kinda like the distance from being away from social media. I feel like I could focus more,” said Brighton High School junior Juliana Hayes.
While some students disliked not being able to constantly keep in touch with family or friends, they noticed fewer distractions.
“After the first day, it’s really not as bad as I thought it would be,” Brighton High School junior Camryn McFadden-Olivier said. “It was honestly kind of easy. I know some people are definitely struggling with the cell phone ban.”
“I was able to pick out my friends in the hallways and interact with them a bit more,” Brighton High School junior Zachary Johnson said. “And overall it was a totally different environment. I didn’t see a lot of heads down. A lot of people were talking more.”
The Brighton School District policy requires students to keep their devices in their lockers until the end of the school day. If a student violates the policy, their device is kept in the main office, their family is contacted, and they receive a disciplinary referral.
