Hall of Fame head coach George Raveling has passed away, according to his family.
The announcement came on Tuesday morning over social media, where his family shared that Raveling died from cancer at 88 years old.
“There are no words to fully capture what George meant to his family, friends, colleagues, former players, and assistants — and to the world. He will be profoundly missed, yet his aura, energy, divine presence, and timeless wisdom live on in all those he touched and transformed,” Raveling’s family wrote in a statement.
Playing college basketball at Villanova, Raveling’s basketball legacy took a massive leap forward when he joined the coaching ranks. He would go on to serve as head coach of Washington State, Iowa, and USC over a career that spanned more than 22 years. He led his teams to eight different NCAA Tournaments and finished with a record of 336-292. Raveling was also named Pac-10 Coach of the Year on three separate occasions.
Even more notably, Raveling’s success at the college level landed him two different coaching stints as an assistant with Team USA. He earned a gold medal during the 1984 Olympics, which is also when he met a young man named Michael Jordan.
Michael Jordan’s Shares Tribute to George Raveling
Aside from his celebrated coaching career, George Raveling also became an essential part of Michael Jordan’s relationship with Nike. Well before Raveling started to work full-time with the famous brand, he helped convince Jordan to ink a deal with the lesser-proven company as he started his NBA career.
Jordan released a statement through Darren Rovell on Raveling’s passing, emphasizing that he is the reason the NBA legend signed with the company.
“I’m deeply saddened to hear about George’s passing. For more than 40 years, he blessed my life with wisdom, encouragement, and friendship. He was a mentor in every season and I’ll always carry deep gratitude for his guidance. I signed with Nike because of George, and without him, there would be no Air Jordan. He lived an extraordinary life, breaking barriers and paving the way for so many who came after him. My thoughts are with Delores, Mark, and George’s many, many friends,” Michael Jordan said in a statement released by Darren Rovell.
Simply put, no matter how you look at it, George Raveling’s impact on the game we know and love today is undeniable. RIP to a basketball icon.
