Colorado State redshirt freshman running back Jalen Dupree appeared in five games for the Rams last season. Redshirt sophomore tight end Jaxxon Warren missed the entire 13-game slate with an injury.
Saturday night in Seattle, not only did the two make their first starts for CSU, but they also each scored their first touchdown.
The Rams may have lost their season opener to Washington, 38-21, but Dupree and Warren made the impact the Rams’ coaching staff knew they were capable of.
Dupree was named the Mountain West Conference freshman of the week for his 15-carry, 92-yard performance that was capped with a score. Warren ended up with six catches for 79 yards, including a 27-yard down-the-middle touchdown reception.
“It was kind of a surreal moment,” Warren said of his touchdown after the game. “It’s been a long wait, but I felt like I was ready for the moment. The coaching staff did a great job of drawing it up, and I just had to go out there and do my job. I trust them and they trust me. We’re just going to keep dialing up plays and keep capitalizing.”
While Warren’s touchdown came in the second half, Dupree’s capped a two-minute drill at the end of the first half. It tied the game at 14-14 just before the break.
He had a 9-yard run on the Rams’ first play of the game and already had 85 yards by halftime.
“I love Jalen,” CSU head coach Jay Norvell said Monday at his weekly press conference. “He’s such a physical back, and he’s such a great competitor. I never worry about him getting tough yards. He’s such a great back in the red zone and in short yardage. That physicality probably gives him the edge right now over our other backs. I think he can really grow with his performance.”
Career high for LB Long
In addition to Dupree and Warren, sophomore linebacker Owen Long got his first start against the Huskies.
One of the players Norvell has praised since last spring, Long finished with a career-high 13 tackles in the loss.
“I think he’s a very bright guy,” Norvell said Monday. “He’s got incredibly high character and he’s a really good athlete. I was surprised when I saw the film. He was involved in almost every play in the first half. He was throwing his body in there, making quick reads, quick decisions. And I think the style of defense we’re playing; it really allows our linebackers to get involved.
“I was really proud of his performance. To play on that stage and the responsibility as a captain to be an example, it was a really good performance by Owen. He’s got a chance to be a special player, there’s no question, and we want to build on that performance.”
Long, who played mostly a backup role last season, had 11 tackles at halftime against Washington. However, in the second half, the Huskes were able to wear down the Rams’ defense and eventually ended the game with more than 500 yards of offense.
But Long believes his performance, and that of his defensive teammates was something to build on.
“I think we got to see what it could be like,” Long said Saturday night following the game. “That’s going to be motivation for all of us to improve and get better this week. Every day we’re going to find a way to get better. We’ve got Northern Colorado on Saturday, and the goal’s just going to go out there and play better and play smarter … and I think we’ve seen what this team can be.”
Big weekend ahead
Not only is Saturday’s game against Northern Colorado the Rams’ home opener, but it is also Ag Day, where the team wears orange to celebrate its agricultural roots.
Additionally, two special groups of athletes will be recognized.
