Off-track drama: Franco Colapinto burgled during F1 summer break

For Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, a relaxing retreat along the pristine shores of Lake Como during Formula 1’s summer break took a turn for the chaotic when opportunistic thieves made off with his belongings.

While soaking up the picturesque sights in Northern Italy, the Argentinian driver returned from the lake only to discover his personal items had vanished into thin air.

Rather than letting the incident completely sour his getaway, Colapinto turned to social media to share the misfortune with his followers, posting pictures of his missing gear along with a wry comment.

"[The] Last photos with this stuff. I was at the lake and my suitcases, clothes and mate [a caffeine-rich herbal drink like tea, common in Argentina] kit disappeared. I hope whoever took it all enjoys it.”

Never one to shy away from lighthearted banter, the young driver followed up with a cheekier, now-deleted observation on the cultural exchange gone wrong:

"Who would have thought that Italians would steal everything from a Latino? I'm sure they won't like the mate."

While losing your wardrobe and custom yerba mate gear is certainly a nuisance, Colapinto’s predicament joins a surprisingly long line of crime-related misadventures suffered by F1 drivers in recent years.

    A familiar F1 storyline

Unlike some of his colleagues, however, the Alpine star at least escaped without a confrontation over high-end luxury watches.

In 2023, McLaren's Lando Norris was mugged outside Wembley Stadium following the Euro 2000 final, with thieves forcibly snatching his £144,000 Richard Mille watch. Charles Leclerc met a similar fate while strolling through Viareggio, Italy, when thieves deftly targeted his own expensive timepiece.

Perhaps the most dramatic counter-offensive occurred outside Milan’s Armani Hotel shortly after the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. When robbers targeted Carlos Sainz at knifepoint for his luxury watch, the Ferrari driver wasn't about to hand it over quietly.

Still wearing his racing boots, Sainz – with the help of a brave bystander – sprinted down the street on foot, successfully cornering the culprits and retrieving his watch before the police arrived.

Compared to high-speed foot chases and stolen luxury watches, Colapinto can take solace in the fact that his stolen goods were largely fabric and herbal tea.

And while the thieves may have walked away with a fresh wardrobe, they likely face a bitter surprise the moment they try brewing their first cup of traditional South American mate.
