Braxton Jones will start at left tackle for the Chicago Bears when the team kicks off its regular season against the Minnesota Vikings in six days on Monday Night Football.
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson made the announcement during his Tuesday press conference. Johnson making it officially official on Tuesday marks the culmination of an offseason of uncertainty at the position.
“He knows what he’s doing,” Johnson said when asked about what Braxton Jones did to earn the opportunity to start in Week 1. “Is it perfect every play? No, it’s not. But we did see the execution go up over the course of the last few weeks, so there is a trust level in him knowing what to do. And we think he is going to continue to ascend the more reps that he gets.”

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) September 2, 2025Why Braxton Jones is the Week 1 starting left tackle
To no one’s surprise, Braxton Jones will begin Year 4 with the Bears as their Week 1 starting left tackle. It didn’t always feel like this would be the case, mind you.
If you’ll recall, Jones was coming off a season-ending leg injury that happened late in 2024. So, obviously, his health was a concern coming into the start of training camp. Plus, it’s not as if the Bears were simply handing Jones a starting job. Instead, they put the three-year starter against Kiran Amegadjie, Theo Benedet, and Ozzy Trapilo in a competition that lasted throughout the entirety of training camp and went through the preseason. Holding off a rookie second-round pick (Trapilo), a second-year third-rounder (Amegadjie), and an undrafted second-year player from Canada (Benedet) might not seem like the highest hurdles to clear. But Braxton Jones did it.
Kudos to Braxton Jones for coming out of this summertime training camp and preseason battle on top. It is a testament to the work he put in while on the comeback trail. But with that being said, the journey isn’t over just yet. Because being the Week 1 starter shouldn’t be the only goal for Jones. In the end, he should be striving to start 17 games. Firstly, because it would be the first time he pulled off that feat since his rookie season in 2022. Secondly, because this is the final year of his rookie contract. What better time to establish yourself than right before entering free agency? But thirdly, because he isn’t promised anything beyond Week 1.
These words from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson from an August press conference still stick with me:
“We’d love to go ahead and solidify that spot and move on from there. And it might be one of those things where when we make that decision, it’s not final for the season. It could be, we have to reassess after a couple of weeks of the season, or by the bye week, we might have to reassess. So it might be something that goes on. It wouldn’t be ideal, but that’s the name of the league.”
I’m not sure if Braxton Jones will be on a short leash starting in Week 1. But Johnson’s words make it seem like he is not afraid to pull the plug on something if it isn’t working. So if Jones isn’t playing up to standard, it would not surprise me to see this coaching staff mix it up. It wouldn’t be ideal. However, if push comes to shove, then I’d rather the Bears mix it up at left tackle than stick with something that isn’t working. Then again, if Jones can prove that he is The Man at left tackle, then a mid-season shakeup isn’t something we’ll be concerned with happening.
