Supermodel Elle Macpherson, 61, is looking back on a major change she made more than two decades ago and the "transformative" impact it had on her life.
When Macpherson shared an Instagram post on Monday, September 1 marking the start of her health and beauty business WelleCo, she shared that she was also celebrating another important milestone in her life: 22 years of sobriety.

"Sparked by the love of my sons @cyfly08 @cybusson and the ultimate act of self love, I celebrate with a graceful and grateful heart," she wrote in her caption. "What a wacky wild and wonderful ride. Thank you to all the people who have loved and supported me along the way. You know who you are — and to those (so many ) who inspired me without even knowing."
Fans cheered Macpherson on in the comments — including one who was surprised to hear that she's gotten sober.
"I never would have guessed you struggled with that as well... you have emerged and evolved so beautifully, and you are an inspiration!" they wrote, to which Macpherson simply responded, "Grateful."
Why Elle Macpherson Decided to Stop Drinking
This isn't the first time that Macpherson has opened up about her sobriety. Over the years, she's spoken about her decision to stop drinking, including in a 2023 interview with Body and Soul.
“I stopped drinking in 2003 because I felt I couldn’t be fully present in my life, and it was a wonderful springboard of getting to know myself on a deeper level,” she said at the time.
“Although it required discipline and persistence, the bottom line is you can’t be well and present in your life if you’re not present and well, and alcohol doesn’t really support that,” she continued, adding, "It’s very difficult to get to know yourself if you’re numbing yourself.”
At that point, Macpherson had reached 20 years without alcohol and said that she felt "incredible" because of it, though she did add that it's a personal decision for everyone.
“Everybody has their own journey and I’m not interested in telling other people what to do but I know that this was a decision that I’ve never regretted,” she said.
Good for Macpherson for doing what she felt was right for her and sticking to it. It couldn't have been easy, but look how far she's come.
