Taylor Swift Once Credited This Beloved Late-Night Host With Giving Her the ‘Best Relationship Advice Ever’

Nearly 13 years ago, Taylor Swift credited a beloved former late-night talk show host with offering her some of the most memorable relationship advice of her life—at least thus far.

A lot can change in over a decade, but at 23 years old, the "Fearless" songstress praised a piece of advice from none other than Jay Leno when it came to choosing her future spouse—aka, Travis Kelce.

The Eras Tour superstar shared the tidbit in response to the final inquiry in “The Cosmo Quiz,” a series of both multiple-choice and open-ended questions that concluded her 2012 cover interview with Cosmo.

Writer Bethany Heitman asked about the "best relationship advice [she] ever got" at the time—sometime ahead of December of that year—and you may be surprised to learn that it happened to come from the late-night host whose show she frequented during the early years of her career, who was 62 at the time of the interview's publication.

"Jay Leno told me, 'It's easy. Just marry your conscience,'" she shared. "'Marry the one who makes you want to be a better person.'"

As the interview resurfaced, fans praised Swift's "profound" take on relationships at such a young age. For example, she shared her number one indicator for identifying the feeling of love was when “any question of why it may not work is answered by ‘we’ll get through it no matter what,'” and revealed that being “happy” was the most “important” thing for a relationship, emphasizing, “I want my relationship to live in the light and not in the dark.”

Her courtship with the Kansas City Chiefs star has certainly shone in the light, between the way she walked right through the front gates at Arrowhead Stadium ahead of her first NFL game, the “unhinged” moment she brought the tight end on stage at the Eras Tour to surprise the crowd, and all of their appearances in between.

Nearly two years into their relationship, the couple that some have compared to American royalty got engaged to be married in their own beautifully decorated backyard. While there are no details about their impending nuptials so far, it's safe to assume they will be working together to plan their "perfect wedding," as during the same interview, Swift thoughtfully admitted that she had no intention of forcing her own scrapbook on her spouse. “I want to build a life with someone that’s based on their dreams as well as my dreams,” she explained. “I don’t want him to wonder if it even matters if he’s there.”
