Rasmus Hojlund ends Manchester United nightmare with transfer clause on Napoli loan deal included

Rasmus Hojlund has completed his summer move to Napoli.

The striker has joined on loan from Manchester United after two tough seasons at Old Trafford.

Hojlund has scored only 26 goals in 95 appearances for United since he joined in a £72million deal from Atalanta in 2023.

He netted his first goal on his 15th appearance for the club and hasn’t featured at all throughout the 2025/26 season.

However, he is set to return to action with his new club Napoli in what marks a return to Serie A football.

It’s understood Napoli have an obligation to buy worth €44million [£38m] included in the deal.

Should they qualify for the Champions League, they will have to pay United that fee and sign him permanently next summer.

United are also set to bank a loan fee from the deal.

    How Hojlund left United

Having been omitted from the matchday squad against Arsenal for the Premier League opener, Hojlund’s time at United looked all but done.

The 22-year-old expressed his intentions to stay and compete for his spot at the club.

“I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens,” Hojlund said.

“Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me. I’m more than ready. I’m feeling sharp so I’m welcoming everything that comes.”

However, United completed the signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth around £74m earlier in August.

Sesko arrived after Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo also joined in moves that cost a combined £133.5m.

Joshua Zirkzee, who signed from Bologna last summer, looks set to stay at Old Trafford amid the increased competition.

talkSPORT reported in June that head coach Ruben Amorim would prefer to keep Zirkzee and sell Hojlund this summer.

On Saturday, United announced the sale of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea in a £40m deal.

talkSPORT understands they have decided against signing Emi Martinez from Aston Villa, with Senne Lammens set to join instead.
