Nyck Harbor TD erased on controversial call, South Carolina fans erupt

On third-and-goal from the Virginia Tech 9-yard-line with 3:52 remaining in the first half, LaNorris Sellers dropped back to pass, arced a ball into the right corner of the endzone, and thought he had connected with wideout Nyck Harbor for a touchdown.

Harbor brought in the catch. Officials on the field ruled it a touchdown. South Carolina was set to go up 14-5.

Then replay review overturned the call on the field.

We're actually not calling this a catch?First Barion Brown in the LSU game, now Nyck Harbor in the South Carolina game, man these overturns are just bad.pic.twitter.com/7JpCdJkJpE

Sellers didn’t control the ball through the ground and, as such, officials deemed the pass incomplete.

South Carolina settled for a field goal to go up 10-5.

On Virginia Tech’s ensuing possession, the Hokies booted through a 56-yard field goal as time expired in the opening half to climb within 2 points of the 13th-ranked Gamecocks.

A 10-8 score will probably feel much different in the South Carolina locker room than a 14-5 score. It certainly upset South Carolina fans online.

Less than 24 hours after a similar play ended in the exact same fashion in Clemson, robbing LSU of a second-half touchdown in what was ultimately a 7-point game, fans and media members alike blasted the application of the catch rule in college football. Many questioned the spirit of the rule. Others called for the rules to be updated.

So after week 1, I now know if you don’t catch the ball with it glued to your body, it’s not a catch. Make common sense common again please.

Goodness. We no longer know what the definition of a catch is in college football. pic.twitter.com/6RXjBykCjn

That’s a catch. What are we doing.

    — Kayce Smith (@KayceSmith) August 31, 2025

You don’t know what a catch is, and neither do I. All I know is that if I’ve ever let go of a football in my life, it wiped all previous catches off the board.

    — Connor O'Gara (@cjogara) August 31, 2025

That (and the LSU catch) being overturned is objectively bad for the game. What are we doing here?

    — parker fleming (@statsowar) August 31, 2025

    What is a catch anymore?

    — Famously Garnet Sports (@FamouslyGarnet) August 31, 2025

The rule has to be fixed. You can’t make a catch 3 feet inbounds, fall out of bounds and then it be ruled a no-catch.

    — Brad Crawford (@BCrawford247) August 31, 2025

Always so fun and not annoying at all to see a catch overturned for not being enough of a textbook catch.

    — Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) August 31, 2025

Back to No one knows what is a catch and what isn’t

    — Rico Bo$co (@Return_Of_RB) August 31, 2025

That’s a catch. I mean I don’t know what a catch is. No one does. That’s the worst part of football regardless of who you root for.

    — Gamecockology (@Gamecockology) August 31, 2025

Catch rules need to be revampedIf you catch the ball and take two steps then get SMACKED and fumble – it’s a fumbleIf you catch the ball and take two steps then go to the ground out of bounds and lose the ball – it’s incompleteLet’s use common sense hereBoth are catches

    — Kurt Benkert (@KurtBenkert) August 31, 2025

I understand controlling the ball to the ground. However, I HATE that rule applying to catches in the end zone. If you catch and secure it with feet down in the end zone, it should be a touchdown. That’s a horrible rule.
