Arrests made in Epping and London after officer punched by ‘aggressive’ protestor

A woman has been arrested in Epping and several people were detained in London after “aggressive” anti-migrant protesters wearing masks stormed a Canary Wharf shopping centre.

Around 200 people gathered outside the Epping Forest District Council building, where a woman climbed the steps and unfurled a Union flag on Saturday evening. She was detained by officers after refusing to leave.

Demonstrators had previously gathered outside the Bell Hotel, which has become the focal point of national protests after an asylum seeker housed there was charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl last month. He has denied the charges.

Any protest must have ended by 8pm and must not block the road, Essex Police said.

Earlier in the day, a police officer in central London’s Canary Wharf was “punched in the face”, the Met Police said.

Videos on social media showed children among protestors storming through a Canary Wharf shopping centre, with men being filmed wearing masks and sunglasses, many carrying England flags.

The police force issued an order to “prevent people concealing their identity with masks” and have made several arrests.

“We are aware there are young children in the protest area… our officers are ensuring the safety of them is paramount,” police said.

“Protesters, including some masked, moved into the Canary Wharf shopping centre where a small group became aggressive towards police. One arrest made. Further officers deployed to assist,” they added in a post on X.

Three arrests were made for common assault, possession of drugs and assault on police/public. order offences.

Anti-migrant protestors and counter-protestors had earlier gathered outside the Canary Wharf’s Britannia Hotel – which has also become symbolic for those demonstrating against the housing of asylum seekers in hotels.
