USC Lands Verbal From JNATS Finalist Ryan McDonald For 2026

By Terin Frodyma on SwimSwam

Ryan McDonald, of Larchmont, NY, and Badger Swim Club (NY), will head across the country to join the University of Southern California Trojan men for 2026.

McDonald made the 50 breaststroke finals at the Speedo Summer Junior National Championships (LCM) earlier this summer, where he finished 28th with a finals time of 29.26, just off of his best time he set in the prelims in 29.11. He added a 35th-place finish in the 100 breast, touching in 1:04.35.

McDonald swam the same two events earlier in the summer at the U.S. National Championships (LCM), finishing 48th in the 50 breast (30.15) and 63rd in the 100 breast (1:07.42).

One of his best showings last year came in November at the TYR Senior Metro Winter Championships (SCY), where he set a trio of lifetime bests. His 100 breast ended up 2nd overall in 53.98, his top individual finish of the meet. His 200 breaststroke also finished in the top five, placing 4th in 2:01.89 (he then improved this time in March to 2:01.76). The 200 freestyle saw another lifetime standard go down in the prelims, with his 1:41.63. McDonald went on to finish 12th overall in 1:42.47.

McDonald wrapped up his junior season at Fordham Preparatory School at the NYCHSAA State Championships in February, where he swam to a pair of individual silvers in the 100 breast (56.13) and the 50 free (21.08).

The Trojans finished 4th out of nine teams at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships last season. Based on McDonald’s best times, he would have made the ‘C’ final of the 100 breaststroke at that meet.

McDonald will join the USC 2026 recruiting class that currently includes Tristan Furlow and Ethan Linville.
