GORHAM, N.Y. – Hundreds of firefighters battled a massive warehouse fire in Gorham, Ontario County. The town issued a shelter-in-place order due to smoky conditions.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski reported live from the scene, describing the intense smoke and flames visible for miles.
Officials said the fire started outside a 57,000-square-foot warehouse owned by Eco Operations LLC around 5:20 p.m. It then spread throughout the building, making it difficult to control.
“It’s tough in the sense of the magnitude of the property itself,” said John Yannotti, director of emergency management. “You can’t just set up like a small handline… You need a large diameter hose to put a lot of water on it.”
Yannotti explained that the complexity of the situation required many trucks to bring in water, which was then put into ponds.
The Ontario County Office of Emergency Management said it expected to have the scene cleaned up by tomorrow.
