The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched a large-scale security campaign in the northeastern city of Hasakah on Saturday, August 30, targeting cells suspected of belonging to the Islamic State (ISIS). Local activists, however, accused the group of detaining civilians, including children, women, and religious figures.
Nawar al-Rahawi, director of the Hasakah Media Center, told Enab Baladi that SDF arrested Iman al-Wardi, her son Amir, and her brother Khidr al-Wardi.
He added that among the detainees was Ali al-Mashouh, a 16-year-old boy who was working at a car repair shop in the industrial zone to support his family. Al-Rahawi said SDF did not disclose the reasons for his arrest nor press any official charges.
Other detainees included Sheikh Imad al-Hassan, imam of al-Tawhid Mosque in the Ghweiran neighborhood, and another resident of the same area.
SDF also raided several homes, including those of Mahmoud al-Saleh, a Sufi cleric known locally as “al-Mulla,” Saleh al-Salamah (“Abu Fayez”), and two young men, Ghazwan al-Mohammad and Mokhlaf al-Aghawat.
According to al-Rahawi, further arrests targeted Abdul Razzaq Suleiman al-Mandeel, Ahmad al-Hamoud al-Awad, and his brother Othman, during operations in the Aziziyah and Salhiyah neighborhoods of Hasakah. He stressed that most of those detained were civilians unconnected to ISIS, and that the campaign sparked widespread resentment among residents.
Al-Rahawi also accused SDF members of looting homes during the raids.
SDF: 39 ISIS Suspects Detained
In a statement Saturday, SDF announced the arrest of 39 ISIS members during the Hasakah campaign, carried out jointly with the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPG).
The statement said SDF seized quantities of weapons and ammunition and confirmed that operations are still underway in several city neighborhoods.
According to SDF, the campaign aimed to pursue “remnants of the organization,” dismantle sleeper and active cells “threatening civilians’ lives,” disrupt logistical support networks, and foil potential ISIS plots to attack prisons and detention facilities.
Military Operations Teams (TOL) also took part, providing intelligence support and ensuring “high precision” in targeting cells while protecting civilian lives, SDF said.
SDF regularly carries out raids in civilian areas and conducts routine campaigns inside al-Hol and Roj camps, which host families of ISIS members.
Human Rights Documentation
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) reported in July that SDF carried out 378 arrests since the start of the year, including 32 children and five women.
A more recent report published on August 2 documented 36 arbitrary detentions by SDF in July alone, among them five children.
SNHR said SDF continues to carry out mass raids that often result in civilian detentions under the pretext of pursuing ISIS cells.
18 ISIS Attacks in August
Meanwhile, Enab Baladi recorded 18 attacks claimed by ISIS against SDF in August, most of them in Deir Ezzor.
The latest occurred on August 28, when ISIS claimed responsibility for targeting an oil tanker near the village of al-Makman in Deir Ezzor.
On August 26, ISIS said its fighters attacked SDF members with machine guns in the village of A‘zman Debis, killing one.
On August 25, ISIS al-Makman claimed responsibility for killing an SDF fighter near the village of al-Abtakh with a pistol, while on August 24, it said it targeted an SDF commander in the town of al-Jerthi, following a similar attack the day before in the same area that killed another fighter.
