Chicago Cubs Lineup: Matt Shaw Sits for Willi Castro

CUBS LINEUP — Last night’s game wound up being a little closer by the end than we’d probably like, but at least the Cubs cashed in on their prime opportunity for offense. And guess what? They have a similarly good matchup on deck for them tonight.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the second of three games against the Rockies at Coors Field.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Carson Kelly, C Dansby Swanson, SS Willi Castro, 3B

There’s not too much going on in the Cubs lineup tonight, but there are two notable bits:

First, Ian Happ, who has been back to his usual self in the second half of the season (122 wRC+), is more consistently hitting in the top part of the batting order, most usually at the expense of PCA, like tonight.

Second, Willi Castro is batting ninth and playing third base in place of Matt Shaw. I’m guessing this is just about the lefty/righty matchup against Rockies righty McCade Brown, but Brown doesn’t have much of a big league sample upon which I can draw specific lefty/righty conclusions.

In other words, it could be about rest for Shaw, a specific matchup they like for Castro outside of handedness, or something else entirely. In any case, it’s Castro, not Shaw tonight.

Other than that, like I said, not much: Tucker in right, Suzuki at DH, Michael Busch leading off, and Carson Kelly behind the plate after a couple of games off.

    Colorado Rockies Lineup:

Tyler Freeman, RF Mickey Moniak, LF Hunter Goodman, C Brenton Doyle, CF Ezequiel Tovar, SS Kyle Karros, Warming Bernabel, 1B Yanquiel Fernandez, DH Ryan Ritter, 2B

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP

Javier Assad will take the mound for his fourth start since returning from the IL. Ultimately, he has started fairly close to regular rest for all of his outings, but he’s been “sent down” about a thousand times in between as the Cubs navigate injuries (Jameson Taillon) and the crowded schedule before rosters expand on Monday.

Generally speaking, Assad has been pretty good so far, especially his last two starts: 10.0 IP, 7H, 2ER, 2BB, 7K.

    Colorado Rockies: McCade Brown, RHP

McCade Brown is a 25-year-old righty, who began the season at High-A and has made only one big league start in his career (last week against the Pirates: 3.2 IP, 5H, 4ER, 3BB, 2K).

He also skipped the Triple-A level entirely, so I just don’t have too much actionable insight on him. That said, he was a third-round pick once upon a time, so there’s probably some upside in there.
