The White House is planning to stage military forces and federal agents in a northern Chicago suburb as early as next week, but will that include the National Guard?
The move is part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to expand immigration enforcement operations in sanctuary cities like Chicago.
Two federal law enforcement officials have told NBC News that ICE, Border Patrol and other agencies will send numerous agents and equipment to the city in an effort to increase arrests of undocumented immigrants in Chicago.
After federal requests in recent weeks, the operating base for the enforcement actions is expected to be Naval Station Great Lakes, located on the North Shore, outside of Chicago. The New York Times reports that more than 200 federal agents and more than 100 vehicles will be part of the operation.
It’s unclear how long the scaled-up operations will last, or if the plan includes the National Guard, according to officials.
“I cannot go quietly into the night to allow our city to be staging grounds for inhumanity,” said Leon Rockingham, the mayor of North Chicago, where the naval station is located.
Rockingham said the base’s captain reported the station will be used for offices, but agents being brought to the region for enforcement will not be staying at the Naval Station Great Lakes.
“I don’t know if they’re National Guard… they’re not going to be staged on base but they will be residing outside in the community,” he said, noting the city still has many unanswered questions about the upcoming enforcement efforts.
Tom Homan, border czar for President Donald Trump’s White House, declined to say how many agents are coming to Chicago as part of the operation.
“I know, but I’m not going to say. We’re not going to tell you how many resources we’re going to send to the city. We don’t want the bad guy to know what we’re sending. It will be a large contingent,” Homan replied.
Rep. Brad Schneider, whose district includes Naval Station Great Lakes, criticized the move and called it an intrusion on Illinois’ sovereignty.
“This is unprecedented territory that we’re in,” he said.
Lake County residents are bracing for the added presence in their communities.
“Our neighbors, my neighbors, friends in the community are fearful of what could happen here,” said Pastor Mark Rollenhagen with St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Chicago Republican Party, said he welcomes the help.
“I think our mayor should sallow his pride, our governor should swallow his pride. If he cares for the people of Chicago then he will work with this president,” Chuck Hernandez said. “Our president was elected on securing our border and making our city safe again.”
Homan said the administrations of Illinois Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have led to the Trump administration making the move.
“All these sanctuary cities that refuse to work with ICE, where we know public safety threats are being released every day into this country — especially those cities — we’re going to address that. We don’t have that problem in Texas and Florida, where all the sheriffs are working with us,” Homan said.
The administration has not been in communication with Pritzker or Johnson for the build-up of federal assets, however.
“They apparently think this is some kind of reality TV show. Their intentions have nothing to do with enforcing the law, nothing to do with keeping the peace — they want to inflame something,” Pritzker said Friday.
