Police in suburban Joliet asked residents to avoid an area where police and fire officials were investigating a report of shots fired Friday.
A shelter in place alert was also issued for the area, though it was lifted around 3 p.m. when police said the scene was secured.
Around 1:30 p.m. Friday, police asked residents to avoid the area of an incident on the 900 block of Ann Street “to allow police and fire personnel access for their equipment” as they investigated a report of a person firing a gun into the air.
Upon arrival, officers learned the incident stemmed from a dispute between neighbors, during which a person “went outside and fired one round into the air,” police said.
Joliet Special Operations Squad also responded to the incident “due to the nature of the call,” police said.
The Joliet S.O.S. searched the home of the man who fired the weapon and no occupants were located. After the search, the scene was released back to Joliet officers and detectives who are continuing the investigation, police said.
Nearby schools were asked to delay dismissal to reduce foot traffic in the area, police said.
“This is an ongoing investigation and very fluid,” police said.
Police asked that only residents of the 900 block of Ann Street be in the area.
One person is in custody, police said.
There was no further information available.
Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked by authorities to contact the Joliet Investigations Division at (815) 724-3020. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous may contact Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734 or visit the Will County Crime Stoppers website.
