Arizona State football head coach Kenny Dillingham said on Friday that quarterback Sam Leavitt found a simple answer in fall camp in how he will lead the Sun Devils this season.
Dillingham explained on Arizona Sports’ Bickley and Marotta the change he’s seen in his quarterback’s leadership style as the Sun Devils get ready to kick off their season against NAU at Mountain America Stadium on Saturday.
“I think through this offseason, he’s kind of changed his leadership style and tried to figure out his style and I think in fall camp, he’s finally settled in on ‘I’m just gonna be me,'” Dillingham said.
“‘This is the best leadership is me being me’ and I think the team has really rallied behind him since he’s settled in to just being him and putting everything on the line like he does every single week.”
“Just be you.”

Leavitt is now the clear-cut favorite to lead the Sun Devils following Cam Skattebo’s departure to the NFL. Leavitt had a strong season in 2024, throwing for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns while also rushing for 443 yards and five touchdowns.

Dillingham added that he stressed the importance of not putting too much on Leavitt’s plate and forcing leadership upon him.
“I think some people force leadership on people and they force people to lead to a point that where they actually change to try to lead. I think the best form of leadership is being who you are and showing that you actually care,” Dillingham said.
“I think when you have a guy like Sam who prepares as good as anybody prepares that I’ve ever see prepare and he cares as much as anybody I’ve ever see care and he’s a good player,” Dillingham said. “He plays physical and he plays with passion.”
