Harry Potter Director Reveals Surprising Reason Why Working With Late Star Alan Rickman Was Frustrating

While Alan Rickman was critically acclaimed for his work in countless films and stage productions, the late actor will perhaps be remembered most of all for his legendary performances as Snape in the Harry Potter film franchise. So fans might be surprised to learn that Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter movies, found working with Rickman "frustrating" — even though the reason why makes perfect sense.

In a clip from a recent GQ interview shared on TikTok, Columbus opened up about what it was like directing Rickman in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, explaining that the actor had a different perspective on the story thanks to a tip from J.K. Rowling.

"Alan had had the opportunity to sit down, maybe have dinner with J.K. Rowling, so he knew exactly where his character was going from day one," Columbus said, adding, "He was not allowed to tell any of us what he knew. So it was frustrating for me as a director, because there were some choices he would be making as an actor. And I didn't understand why he was going there."

Columbus went on to elaborate on Rickman's "choices," explaining that he would sometimes "let his guard down a little as Snape."

"And I didn't understand why. I would say, 'Alan, why did you do that on that last take?' And he goes, 'I can't tell you.' It was very frustrating," Columbus said.

"So, he was just like, 'Just trust me.' And as we were cutting the film together, even though we didn't know where Snape's character was going, those choices appeared to be right, because they made his character in that first film more complex and more interesting," he continued.

In one of Rickman's diary entries published posthumously by The Guardian, the star recorded the details of his initial meeting with Rowling.

"She nervously lets me in on a few glimpses of Snape's background. Talking to her is talking to someone who lives these stories, not invents them," he wrote in 2000.

Later, in a 2007 entry, Rickman reflected on Snape's death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

"I have finished reading the last Harry Potter book," he wrote. "Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he ever knew and calls his son Albus Severus...This was a genuine rite of passage. One small piece of information from Jo Rowling seven years ago — Snape loved Lily — gave me a cliff edge to hang on to."

All these years later, fans are still hanging on to that same cliff...and they'll never forget Rickman's deeply layered and heartfelt portrayal of the beloved character.
