Jim DiBernardo swam from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco when he was in his 40s.
At 71 years old, he’s gonna do it again.
“I am ready to go, I’ve trained hard, I feel good,” said the retired police major.
Dibo, as his friends call him, worked 36 years with the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office. And his public service continues, as these days he’s squarely focused on human trafficking.
“Miami is number four, we are number four in the United States, and there are a lot of people that don’t realize it,” Dibo said. “I suggest that you start opening your eyes to what is going on because one day it could be your son or daughter, or your grandkid.”
On Sunday, Dibo will take part in the Alcatraz Open Swim, from the prison island to the shores of San Francisco.
He’s doing it to raise money for Embrace House, a South Florida non-profit organization that mentors victims of human trafficking.
His partner in the project is his former Administrative Assistant Maria Santamaria, Embrace House’s Director.
“He has never asked for anything other than to explain to him what human trafficking is,” Santamaria said. “He has never asked to meet any of the survivors; he has never asked for anything, so that shows the kindness of his heart,” she said.
Dibo needed harsh training conditions, similar to San Francisco Bay, so he ventured to Vermont to swim in a waterfall.
“I was looking for current, well, I got more than current,” he said.
A friend suggested Dibo take on Bingham Falls.
“That was stronger than any current I will see in Alcatraz,” Dibo said.
His goal is not only to finish the swim but also to raise as much money as he can for Embrace House.
Dibo is urging people to contribute to his cause by visiting his secure and official Donor Box Page.
The Alcatraz Open Swim happens this Sunday Some 700 people are participating.
Dibo predicts he will finish in the top 150.
