FCS in the NFL: NDSU, SDSU and Programs With the Most Players on 2025 Rosters

Having shifted their usual work day from Saturday to Sunday, about 200 former FCS players are on 2025 NFL season-opening rosters and practice squads.

FCS football has flexed its muscle once again with about 200 former players on NFL rosters as of Thursday.

For the fifth consecutive season, North Dakota State has the most NFL players among FCS programs – nine alumni on active rosters/injured reserve and 15 overall including practice squads and the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. The Bison have captured 10 of the last 14 FCS national titles, and their NFL alumni include the highest-drafted player in FCS history, quarterback Carson Wentz, No. 2 overall in 2016 and now a backup with the Minnesota Vikings.

South Dakota State, the 2022 and ’23 FCS champion, was second among FCS programs with eight NFL players overall, including seven on active rosters/IR. Yale was third with six alumni on active rosters/IR.

The NFL’s opening weekend is Sept. 4-8. Transactions are slowing from earlier this week, when all 32 teams reduced their rosters to 53 players, then made practice squad signings.

Following are the FCS programs with the most former players in NFL organizations. The players included went directly to the NFL or spent the majority of their careers in the subdivision and had only one final season on the FBS level.
