None of the main childhood vaccines in England reached the 95 per cent uptake target in 2024/25, new figures show.
Some 91.9 per cent of five-year-olds had received one dose of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine, unchanged from 2023/24 and the lowest level since 2010/11, according to the UK Health Security Agency. Just 83.7 per cent of five-year-olds had received both MMR doses, down year on year from 83.9 per cent and the lowest level since 2009/10.
Uptake of the first MMR dose at 24 months stood at 88.9 per cent – unchanged on the previous year, but again the lowest figure since 2009/10.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine are required for long-lasting and full protection against measles, mumps, and rubella because the first dose does not provide immunity to everyone. More than 99 per cent immunity is reached through both doses.
There has been a renewed focus on measles vaccine coverage following the death of a child at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool last month after contracting measles. The hospital said the highly contagious virus was on the rise among young people in the region and it had seen a surge in “seriously unwell” children being admitted.
The child, whose age and sex is unknown, is believed to be the second child in England to die in the past five years after contracting measles. Parents and carers are being urged to ensure that children are fully vaccinated as health officials warn low vaccine uptake is behind the rise.
In 2024 there were 2,911 laboratory confirmed measles cases in England, the highest number of cases recorded since 2012.
Elsewhere, coverage for the Hib/MenC vaccine, which protects against Haemophilus influenzae type B and meningitis C, stood at 88.9 per cenr for children in England aged five, down from 89.4 per cent in 2023/24 and the lowest level since 2011/12.
Meanwhile, some 91.4 per cent of children had completed their primary course of the 6-in-1 vaccine by the age of 12 months, up year on year from 91.2 per cent. The 6-in-1 vaccine protects against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B, and hepatitis B.
The primary course consists of three doses, given at eight, 12 and 16 weeks. It is the first year on year increase in uptake of this type of vaccine since 2019/20.
