Chicago-area naval base asked to potentially support ICE operation

As President Donald Trump mulls deploying National Guard members to Chicago, Naval Station Great Lakes has been approached about supporting ICE operations.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the base would see federal agents stationed there in September, citing an email from a Navy captain to his leadership team.

The report suggested agents from the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Patrol could be housed at the base.

According to a statement from a U.S. Navy spokesperson, officials at the base have been approached by Trump administration officials about potential “limited support” for immigration enforcement operations in the area next month.

“Naval Station Great Lakes has been approached by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding a potential request to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations,” the statement read. “At this time, no decisions have been made. The request involves limited support in the form of facilities, infrastructure, and other logistical needs to support DHS operations.”

Officials at the base also told NBC Chicago they have not received “any official request” to support a National Guard mission in the city.

A senior DHS official did not confirm that the administration has made such a request, but issued a statement on their mission at the president’s direction.

“President Trump has been clear: we are going to make our streets and cities safe again. Across the country, DHS law enforcement are arresting and removing the worst of worst including gang members, murderers, pedophiles, and rapists that have terrorized American communities,” the official said.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he has received no communication from the White House or other officials on plans for any operations in Chicago, and said he learned of the potential plans from journalists.

“I want to be clear: we have received no calls from the White House, from the federal government, from anybody in charge of some kind of troop movement,” he said. “We’re glad to have read about it, but we’d have rather had some direct communication.”
