Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, revealed that she had to find a "different way" to communicate with him after he was diagnosed with dementia.
"The language is going, and we've learned to adapt," Heming Willis, 47, said of her husband's communication skills during ABC’s Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special on Tuesday, August 26. "We have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different way."
Despite having to adapt amid his health struggles, Heming Willis told Diane Sawyer that she was "grateful that my husband is still very much here."
Willis' family announced he was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022. The brain disorder “affects how you communicate,” according to The Mayo Clinic. “It can impact your speech, as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language.”
Nearly one year later, the family explained his health battle had progressed to frontotemporal dementia. The condition is “an umbrella term for a group of brain diseases that mainly affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain,” per The Mayo Clinic. “These areas of the brain are associated with personality, behavior and language.”
During the interview, Heming Willis explained that there are still "moments" where she sees the "twinkle in his eye," hears his "hardy laugh" and gets a glimpse of his signature "smirk." Heming Willis added that those moments with Willis, 70, make her feel "transported" back to a time before his diagnosis.
"And it's just hard to see, because as quickly as those moments appear, then it goes. It's hard," Heming Willis continued.
