A new book shares the stories of Greeley Mexican American residents from 1920 to the present day.
The Mexican American History Project: Greeley collaborated with the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area to release “Our History Our Voice.”
A public celebration for the book takes place at Fiesta in the Park from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Centennial Village Museum, 1475 A. St., Greeley. Copies of the book will be available for sale, along with a book signing by the authors.
“This book will help give a voice and perspective of Greeley Mexican Americans that is seldom heard and validate our history and contributions in a place we call home,” said Emma Pena-McCleave, project coordinator for the Mexican American History Project: Greeley.
Fiesta in the Park will also feature live mariachi music, Ballet Folklorico Orgullo Latino dancers, crafting, tortilla-making and blacksmithing demonstrations. There will also be guided museum tours and cultural displays, along with free beverages and snacks.
The book features 44 narrators and is split into two parts. The first part has historical research from Greeley’s past, with the second part featuring oral histories collected from local residents. The book covers topics such as immigration, education, civic engagement and social justice.
“Teaming up with the Mexican American History Project Greeley to preserve their stories and perspectives has been a privilege,” said Sabrina Stoker, executive director of the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area. “This project is a great example of the power of public-private partnerships within a national heritage area.”
The Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area and the National Park Foundation provided financial support for the book.
