Ryan Poles Speaks: What’s Up With Zah Frazier? Injury Updates, Trench Talk, Current Vibes, More

While NFL fans and analysts obsessively watch NFL cut-down day, someone like Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has to ride the emotional roller coaster. We highlighted some things Poles said during his Tuesday press conference after the team released its initial 53-man roster. Enjoy!

Where is Zah Frazier?

One of the biggest mysteries of the summer surrounded the status of cornerback Zah Frazier. The rookie fifth-round pick didn’t play in the preseason and was not involved in training camp activities. Frazier was said to be missing time due to personal reasons, but no specifics were ever mentioned. On Tuesday, Bears GM Ryan Poles brought clarity to the situation.

“He had a situation that presented itself in a category that I would say is personal,” Poles said. “As we dug into it, tried to help him out, it revealed itself as something that happened before he got here. So credit to our staff finding the root cause of what he was going through.”

Poles called it “kind of a bummer” but added that the team’s work on the situation has Frazier on the right path. The UTSA product won’t play at all as a rookie after being placed on the non-football injury list. Frazier hasn’t practiced since May, but he will be allowed to work out with the team and be in meetings. If you are looking for a silver lining, perhaps you can find it in that this could essentially be used as a redshirt year for Frazier. Maybe this minor setback sets up a major bounce back in 2026.

    Jaylon Johnson Injury Update

The Ryan Poles update regarding Pro Bowl cornerback left me with mixed feelings.

On the one hand, Poles called Johnson’s injury “a little bit more significant,” which feels like a 180-degree turn compared to what he said when he first mentioned it at the start of training camp. But on the other hand, Poles made it clear that he is pushing for CB1 to be available in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings. For what it’s worth, I thought this quote was encouraging:

“When I was going out to practice, he was running and doing agility work, so I feel like he’s getting better. When you’re going from not playing and just training to football, there are all kinds of different things that kind of change timelines, so we’re hopeful that he continues to get better. But we also have to be smart to make sure he is good long-term, as well. We’ll just take that day by day and really work with our medical staff to make sure we’re doing right by Jaylon.”

Jaylon Johnson has put together back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons and appears to be playing at the peak of his power. In 2024, Johnson ever garnered second-team All-Pro recognition. Even with Jordan Addison out of the lineup for the Week 1 matchup against the Vikings, having a healthy Jaylon to square off against Justin Jefferson is a must if the Bears are to have a puncher’s chance against a team that won 14 games last season.

Extra Points with Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles

More from Ryan Poles on Jaylon Johnson’s injury issue: “I know there’s a lot of questions about it. It’s really not that complicated. He had a pretty good soft-tissue injury before he got here.” Poles offers an update on the running back situation, which features updates on injured backs Roschon Johnson and Kyle Monangai (and a hint that external additions could be considered): “I feel good about their timelines. Kyle’s coming along. Over the next few days, you’ll probably see the practice field look a little different. I’ve got a lot of faith that those guys will be ready to go. If they’re not, we’ll look out and see if there are guys that can help us.” The way the Bears GM smirked (pictured above in the featured image) when he said “with Ben’s creativity, who knows who will be lined up back there?” looked devious in all the best ways. It is evident that Ryan Poles is enamored with having Ben Johnson as his head coach right now. I can’t say I blame him one bit. Not where guys were drafted. So I’m proud of that.” Poles on the offensive line: “I feel really good about that position right now. … “I think that (Preseason Week 3) game was pretty good in terms of how they held up. The pocket was pretty strong. We’ve seen in the run game, really through training camp, you can see hip to hip, four numbers getting movement, and that’s something we have to be good at to have success on offense this year, and I felt like you could see that throughout training camp and in the preseason games.” Some love for the D-line: “This was the best training camp Montez (Sweat) has had. He’s in really good shape, ready to go. I think (Gervon) Dexter’s ready to make a move. And then when you put those guys together with (Grady Jarrett), he’s been a great addition, not only on the field but his leadership, that whole group is really lifted in terms of their play and their mentality.”
